Southern Highlands Tree Services

Qualified Arborist Services

An arborist is essentially a tree doctor. They’re experts in taking care of trees, much like how a vet is an expert in taking care of pets.

Arborist or Tree Lopper?

The terms “arborist” and “tree lopper” are often used interchangeably by the public, but they are not the same. Both are involved in tree care, but their level of expertise and the services they offer can vary significantly.

Arborist

Arborists understand what trees need to grow and stay healthy, how to diagnose and treat diseases or problems they might have, and how to safely prune or remove them if necessary. They’re trained in both the science and art of planting, caring for, and maintaining all types of trees.

Tree Health Assessment

Arborists diagnose and treat tree diseases and pests. They assess overall tree health and make recommendations for care, such as watering, mulching, and pest management

Tree Pruning

Arborists professionally prune trees to enhance their health and appearance. Pruning can also ensure safety by removing dead or weak branches that could potentially fall and cause damage

Tree Removal

Sometimes, tree removal is necessary, whether due to disease, a dangerous lean, or construction projects. Arborists can safely remove trees in challenging locations without causing property damage

Planting & Transplanting

Arborists can advise on the right species of trees to plant for a particular location, considering local climate, soil conditions, and the homeowner’s preferences. They can also help with transplanting trees, which requires knowledge of tree biology to minimize stress and promote healthy growth.

Emergency Tree Care

After storms or accidents, arborists can evaluate damaged trees and make decisions about pruning or removal to preserve the tree’s health and prevent further damage to property

Tree Lopper

The terms “arborist” and “tree lopper” are often used interchangeably by the public, but they are not the same. Both are involved in tree care, but their level of expertise and the services they offer can vary significantly.

Differences

Level of Training & Expertise

Arborists typically have more formal education and training than tree loppers. They are more confident in technically challenging situations like removing a tree between a house and a greenhouse.  Arborists are experts in tree biology, diagnosis, treatment, and care. Tree loppers might have practical experience in tree cutting but might not have the same depth of knowledge about tree health and preservation.

Approach to
Tree Care

Arborists take a more holistic and long-term approach to tree care, focusing on maintaining the overall health and longevity of the tree. Tree loppers, on the other hand, are more likely to focus on the immediate task of cutting or removing tree branches or trees.

Recognised Certifications

In Australia, qualified arborists usually hold a Level II Certification or above in Arboriculture, while tree loppers may not have this qualification.

Advice and Consultation

Arborists are well-equipped to provide advice and consultations on tree planting, tree health, disease management, and preventative care. This might not be within the scope of services offered by tree loppers.

Similarities

Tree Pruning and Removal

Both arborists and tree loppers can perform tree pruning and removal. They have the tools and skills necessary to trim branches and take down trees.

Emergency Services

Both can also provide emergency services, such as in the aftermath of a storm or other severe weather events that may cause tree damage.

In short...

If you're simply looking to have a tree or branch removed, both a tree lopper and an arborist can get the job done. However, if you're shaping a tree, removing dead wood, removing the whole tree or seeking advice on tree health, disease diagnosis and treatment, or long-term tree care strategies, you'd be better served by a qualified arborist.
